Twitter Vocabulary in Japanese: The Most Important Words

Twitter Vocabulary in Japanese: The Most Important Words

Words for account, post and timeline, so you can use X in Japanese.

In this article I share a list of Japanese words related to Twitter, which is now called X. With this list you can switch the app to Japanese, use it day to day and improve your learning through immersion and daily contact with the language.

Many of these words may already be familiar from anime or from Japanese accounts you follow. The list is deliberately practical: for each English term you get the Japanese word that actually appears in the interface and in everyday posts, plus the reading in romaji.

What changed when Twitter became X

On 24 July 2023, Twitter was officially renamed X. The new name also changed several Japanese terms in the interface: the “tweet” (ツイート, tsuīto) became the “post” (ポスト, posuto), and the “retweet” (リツイート, ritsuīto) became the “repost” (リポスト, riposto).

In practice you will come across both versions. Older guides, books and even native speakers still use ツイート and リツイート, while the app itself now shows ポスト and リポスト. Knowing both means you can follow most conversations about social media in Japan.

How to learn with this list

Switch the language in the app to Japanese. It is tiring at first, but you see the words every day in the same place, so they stick faster than with a vocabulary list alone.

When you scroll, note down the words you do not know and write them with the context in which they appeared. A word like 通知 (tsūchi, notification) is easier to remember if you also write where it showed up. If you like, use flashcards or an app with spaced repetition.

Follow a few Japanese accounts about topics you enjoy, too. The words from this list appear there constantly, and you pick up the phrases around them at the same time.

I hope you enjoy this list of Japanese Twitter words. Since this article is just a list, thank you in advance for reading, sharing and commenting. If a word is missing, write it in the comments.
