Cookie Policy
This policy explains what cookies and similar technologies are, how Suki Desu uses them, what categories exist, the legal bases that apply under Brazil's General Data Protection Law (LGPD, Law 13.709/2018), and how you can manage or withdraw your consent at any time.

What cookies and similar technologies are
Cookies are small text files that a website saves on your device — computer, mobile phone or tablet — when you visit it. They allow the site to recognise your browser on subsequent visits, keep sessions active, remember chosen settings and automatically collect usage data.
Session cookies exist only while the browser is open and are deleted when you close it. Persistent cookies remain on the device for a set period — days, months or even years — and are read each time you return to the same site. First-party cookies are set by the domain you are visiting; third-party cookies are set by external domains, such as advertising networks or analytics services embedded in the page.
Suki Desu and the services it integrates may also use similar technologies: web beacons and tracking pixels (small invisible images that record whether a page was loaded), browser local storage (localStorage and sessionStorage, which work similarly to cookies but are not automatically sent to the server), and device identifiers generated by third-party scripts. Throughout this policy, the term 'cookies' covers all of these technologies.
Why Suki Desu uses cookies
Suki Desu is a free website covering Japanese culture, the Japanese language, anime, manga, the otaku universe and travel to Japan, published since 2014 in 15 languages. To sustain this operation without charging readers, the site relies on advertising revenue — primarily through Google AdSense. Cookies are an essential part of that model: without them, basic functions stop working, the user experience deteriorates and the ability to maintain free content is compromised.
Suki Desu uses cookies for four concrete purposes: ensuring the technical functioning of pages; remembering user preferences, including the language selected from the 15 available on the site; measuring how content is consumed in order to improve editorial quality; and displaying advertisements that fund the site's operation. Each purpose corresponds to a cookie category described in the section below.
Suki Desu does not use cookies to collect sensitive personal data, to build identifiable personal profiles outside the context of behavioural advertising managed by Google's partners, or to sell user data directly to third parties.
Categories of cookies used
Essential or strictly necessary cookies are indispensable for the basic functioning of the site — session control, security and navigation between pages. They do not require consent because the site simply cannot function without them. These are first-party cookies, lasting for the duration of a session or a few days.
Preference cookies record user choices that must be retained between visits — primarily the selected language, given that Suki Desu operates in 15 languages. Without these cookies, the site cannot remember your preferred language and you would need to select it on every visit. They are first-party cookies, lasting from weeks to months, and require consent.
Performance and analytics cookies measure how visitors interact with content — which pages are most visited, time spent on site and traffic sources. This data is used in aggregate form to improve the editorial and technical quality of the site. They may be first-party or third-party (via integrated analytics services), with variable duration, and require consent.
Advertising and marketing cookies are used by Google AdSense and its partners to display advertisements based on a user's browsing history on this and other sites. They allow ads to be more relevant to each visitor's profile. These are third-party cookies, set and managed by Google and its network of partners, with variable duration in accordance with Google's own policies. They require consent and may be declined without blocking access to Suki Desu's editorial content — advertisements will still appear on pages, but without personalisation.
Third-party cookies: Google AdSense, embedded videos and analytics
Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve advertisements based on a user's prior visits to this and other websites. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve personalised ads. Suki Desu has no access to or control over these cookies — they are set, read and managed directly by Google and its advertising network partners, and are governed by those third parties' own privacy policies.
Suki Desu may embed external content in its pages, such as video players from third-party platforms. When you load a page containing such content, the servers of those platforms may set cookies or use similar technologies independently of Suki Desu, in accordance with each service's own policies. Third-party analytics services integrated into the site may also place cookies to measure page performance.
To understand how Google collects and uses data through advertising cookies, consult the Google Privacy Policy and Partner Terms at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites. To opt out of personalised Google advertising, visit google.com/settings/ads. For opt-out options from third-party advertising networks participating in industry programmes, visit aboutads.info/choices (North American market) and youronlinechoices.eu (European market).
Legal basis and consent (LGPD)
The processing of personal data carried out through cookies on Suki Desu complies with Brazil's General Data Protection Law (LGPD, Law 13.709/2018). The legal basis varies by cookie category. Essential cookies are processed on the basis of necessity for the performance of the service requested by the user (Article 7, V of the LGPD), as the site cannot function without them. Preference, analytics and advertising cookies are processed on the basis of the data subject's consent (Article 7, I of the LGPD).
Consent for non-essential cookies may be withdrawn at any time without affecting the lawfulness of processing carried out before withdrawal. You may withdraw consent through your browser settings, the advertising management tools described in this policy, or by contacting Suki Desu directly at contato@skdesu.com.
As a data subject under the LGPD, you have the right to: confirmation that your data is being processed; access to your data; correction of incomplete, inaccurate or outdated information; anonymisation, blocking or deletion of unnecessary data or data processed unlawfully; data portability; deletion of data processed on the basis of consent; information about sharing with third parties; information about the option to withhold consent and the consequences of doing so; and withdrawal of consent at any time. To exercise any of these rights, contact us at contato@skdesu.com.
How to manage, disable or refuse cookies
All modern browsers allow you to view, block or delete cookies individually or by domain. Settings are generally found under Settings > Privacy and Security (Chrome and Edge), Settings > Privacy and Security (Firefox) or Preferences > Privacy (Safari). Each browser has its own interface, but all offer the option to block third-party cookies specifically without blocking the first-party cookies required for the site to function.
To manage personalised Google advertising, visit google.com/settings/ads or adssettings.google.com. There you can disable ad personalisation based on your browsing history. To opt out from third-party advertising networks participating in industry programmes, visit aboutads.info/choices (DAA) and youronlinechoices.eu (EDAA).
You may refuse non-essential cookies — including advertising cookies — without losing access to Suki Desu's editorial content. Articles, guides and materials on Japanese culture and the Japanese language remain fully available. Advertisements will continue to appear on pages, but without personalisation based on your browsing profile.
Consequences of disabling cookies
Disabling or blocking cookies affects the Suki Desu experience in ways that depend on which category is blocked. Blocking essential cookies may prevent certain basic navigation functions from working correctly. Disabling preference cookies means the site will no longer remember the language you chose from the 15 available — you will need to reselect it on each visit, and other locally saved settings will also be lost.
Disabling analytics cookies means Suki Desu will not collect usage data from that visitor. This does not affect browsing, but reduces the site's ability to identify content improvements from aggregate data. Refusing advertising cookies keeps Google AdSense advertisements on Suki Desu pages but removes personalisation based on browsing history — ads become contextual or generic. Refusing advertising cookies does not block ads; it only removes personalisation.
Embedded third-party content — such as external video players — may not load correctly if the cookies or local storage required by those services are blocked by the browser. This is determined by the external services themselves and is independent of Suki Desu's configuration.
Updates to this policy
This Cookie Policy may be updated periodically to reflect changes in the technologies used, in advertising partners, in legal requirements or in Suki Desu's editorial practices. The effective date of the current version is shown at the top of this page.
Material changes — such as changes to the legal bases for processing, to the identity of advertising partners or to data subjects' rights — will be highlighted prominently on this page. The version bearing the most recent date is always the version in force.
