List of kanji taught in Japanese schools, in the order students learn them

One of the great difficulties in learning Japanese is the kanji. They carry a huge part of the language and they have their charms, but the pile still looks endless when you first sit down with it. How do Japanese students actually get through this at school?

A lot of learners freeze because these characters sit so far from the Latin alphabet. They are not something you finish in one year the way children finish the Roman alphabet (romaji). Japanese kids grow up treating kanji as ordinary writing, not as a special mountain, so you do not have to treat the list below as impossible either.

To make good use of this list, keep a workbook, a paper dictionary, or an online dictionary such as Jisho nearby. Copy the characters you want and examine them one by one — stroke order, readings, then a couple of real words.

How Japanese students learn kanji, grade by grade

The education ministry publishes a table of education kanji — kyōiku kanji, also called gakushū kanji — that elementary schools must teach from first through sixth grade. The current table has 1,026 characters. It grew from 1,006 in the 2017 course of study, fully in force from 2020, mainly so every child can write the kanji used in prefecture names such as 埼玉, 大阪, and 沖縄 by the end of fourth grade.

Official elementary counts: 1st grade 80 · 2nd 160 · 3rd 200 · 4th 202 · 5th 193 · 6th 191. Total: 1,026.

Preschool does not teach kanji as a formal subject. First grade starts with the simplest everyday characters. From about fourth grade, students meet more on'yomi and kun'yomi pairs for the same character. Each year they also review what came before: the usual classroom rule is to read this year's kanji and write last year's.

After elementary school, the remaining 1,110 characters of the 2,136 jōyō kanji are taught in junior high. There is no official year-by-year split for those — textbooks decide the order. High school is where writing of the harder ones firms up, and plenty of adults still pick up extra characters from names, manga, and work. Fourth-year school kanji — 202 characters

Fourth grade is where the table changed most. Twenty prefecture-name characters moved down from later school years, and a few others shifted between grades, so the official set is now 202 rather than 200.

The current fifth-year set has 193 characters. Some of the old fifth-year kanji moved to fourth grade; others arrived from sixth.

Sixth-year school kanji — 191 characters

By the end of sixth grade a student is expected to handle the full 1,026 education kanji. The sixth-year slice is now 191 characters.

After elementary school: the rest of the jōyō kanji

The old three-year split you still see on some pages — 320, 320, and 299 — comes from an earlier regular-use list of 1,945 characters. That split was never an official year table from the ministry, and it does not match the current 2,136-character jōyō list.

Junior high covers the remaining 1,110 regular-use kanji. High school keeps using them in denser texts. If you want the full set in one place, start from the 2,136 jōyō kanji rather than from a leftover high-school dump.

Characters beyond that — jinmeiyō for names, or hyōgai that show up on signs and in fiction — are real, but they are not a third official school list. Look them up when you meet them.
