The name of the protagonist of the anime has a very interesting meaning. The name Naruto is actually a type of kani or kamaboko used in traditional Japanese ramen. There is also a city in Japan called Naruto.

Uzumaki [渦巻き] means spiral, whirlpool, vortex, and it is fitting for the Naruto ingredient, which also has a spiral shape as we can see in the image below.

The name Naruto, besides referring to the ingredient, also conveys the idea of whirlpool and spiral. It can even refer to a cooking technique that cuts food in a spiral.

The name Naruto also refers to his mother, who belonged to the Uzumaki clan in the Land of Whirlpools.

The name Kakashi literally means scarecrow, while Hatake means dry field.

Kishimoto makes scarecrows appear in scenes where Kakashi participates, and Naruto used a scarecrow of the sensei during training for the second phase of the Chuunin Shiken.

Characters Inspired by the Tale of Jiraiya

Some characters from the anime Naruto are inspired by a traditional Japanese tale called “The Tale of the Gallant Jiraiya.” We have a major character named Jiraiya, whose name means “Young Thunder.”

We have the name Orochimaru where Orochi means “Great Serpent Snake,” an eight-headed snake that is also a character from the Tale of Jiraiya. The three Legendary Sannins pay homage to “Jiraiya Gouketsu Monogatari.”

The Tale of Jiraiya, The Gallant was published in Japan from 1839 to 1868 and comprises 43 novels. This traditional story has inspired various works over the years, including much of the Naruto anime, even a story arc of the same name.
