Nuki Kotoba: Removing Casual Japanese Particles [い] and [ら]

In this article I will give you a very important tip for you to make your Japanese more natural. The Japanese casually take the lyrics i [い] of some verbs, and this is called I nuki kotoba [い抜き言葉] or ra nuki kotoba [ら抜き言葉].

the omission of the letter i [い] or ra [ら] occurs in various grammatical structures and mainly at the end of them. It is a way of abbreviating words and is probably related to language quirks, so it is treated as something informal.

In the case of "ra" [ら], it is omitted in potential verbs ending in rareru [られる] turning only reru [れる]. See the examples below:

• 「喋られる」 turns → 「喋れる」
• 「教えられる」turns → 「教えれる」
• 「見られる」turns →「見れる」
