In this article, we will share a complete list of the 10 most popular mangakas in Japan. The article consists of two lists, the first shows the 20 most popular mangakas according to the Japanese, followed by the top 10 mangakas with details.
Just a reminder that some mangakas do not usually disclose their identities and even less like to have their information revealed, for this reason I will not include the information of some in this ranking, I apologize for that.
Another important piece of information is the fact that there are no pre-selected candidates like in an election, the site usually leaves the opinion entirely up to the visitor. In other words, you choose your favorite mangaka, not some option that is already selected. I believe it is quite free, but there are some downsides.
One downside is the dispersion of votes, because there are many artists in Japan, which leads to the occurrence of more than 30 or more in the survey. This differs from one with pre-selected candidates because the votes would not be dispersed. And this dispersion causes the relatively small number of votes among the top 10.

10th place – Mangaka Tsubaki Izumi
With 203 mentions pointing to Tsubaki Izumi, she occupies our lowest place in the top 10. She (yes, it seems she is a woman, I have my doubts because I couldn’t find any photos of her on the internet) was born on December 11 in Saitama, Japan and is well known for creating Gekkan Shōjo Nozaki-kun.

9th place – Mangaka Akira Toriyama
I believe this master needs no introduction, and despite being in ninth place, his work has already earned him a reputation that I classify as “living legend.” We are talking about the master Akira Toriyama, who received 257 mentions from visitors. There is already a post specifically for this legend here on the site.
But for those who don’t know, I believe it suffices to say that he is the creator of Dragon Ball. Just that is enough. Below you can acquire some of his works:

8th place – Mangaka Gosho Aoyama
With 275 opinions, the creator of the original work that the Detective Conan anime was based on occupies this position. Yes, we are talking about the creator of the manga Detective Conan, the one and only Gosho Aoyama.
He (this one I am sure is a man) was born on June 21, 1963, in Hokuei, Tottori Prefecture, Japan. And his Detective Conan series combined managed to reach 200 million copies worldwide in 2017.

7th place – Mangaka Rumiko Takahashi
With 358 votes, Rumiko Takahashi holds this position. And for those who don’t know, she is one of the few women who have succeeded in the industry, and she ranks among the richest mangakas in Japan, even among men.
She was born on October 10, 1957, and some of her works are popular worldwide, such as InuYasha. Takahashi is also the artist who has sold the most mangas; as of February 2013, over 170 million copies have been sold.
6th place – Mangaka Hiromu Arakawa
This is another female representative in the industry, and she received 370 nominations for the survey. We are talking about the creator of a work whose anime adaptation is at the top of the rankings on My Anime List. We are talking about the creator of the Fullmetal Alchemist manga, Hiromu Arakawa.
She was born on May 8, 1973, in Hokkaido. She often portrays herself as a cow wearing glasses, as she was born and raised on a dairy farm, and her birth name is Hiromi. But the first character of her name is written the same way as the male name Hiromu. So she chose the masculine form as her pseudonym.
5th place – Mangaka Masashi Kishimoto
With 404 nominations, another master in the industry, the acclaimed Masashi Kishimoto. I believe I don’t have much to say here, but if I start, I believe I won’t be able to stop, so I think it’s better for you to move on to the next one. But leave your comment if you want an article specifically about Kishimoto.
But for those who don’t know, this is the creator of Naruto, yes the rejected boy who dreams of becoming someone very important and being recognized by everyone.
4th place – Mangaka Yoshihiro Togashi
The occupant of this position received 425 opinions in his favor. But I believe it is deserved, after all, his works are great. After all, who hasn’t heard of Yu Yu Hakusho or Hunter x Hunter? We are talking about Yoshihiro Togashi.
He was born on April 27, 1966, in Yamagata, and began drawing manga at an early age. And since one is little and two is good, Togashi is married to Naoko Takeuchi, the author of Sailor Moon.
3rd place – Mangaka Eiichiro Oda
Eiichiro Oda received 539 opinions to take the position that opens the podium. He was born on January 1, 1975, and his most famous work is known for never ending, we are talking about One Piece. However, I don’t have much to say about this artist, so let’s move on to the next one.
2nd place – Mangaka Sui Ishida
Sui Ishida received 551 nominations that earned him the second place on the podium. There may be cases of people who are unaware of this mangaka’s existence, but I believe that one of the most successful animes in recent years has been based on the original work of this artist.
We are talking about the creator of the Tokyo Ghoul manga, whose story is about a teenager who transforms into a ghoul. I believe many people know the anime, but it’s good to know that the manga is being sold in Brazil by the Panini publisher.
1st place – Mangaka Hideaki Sorachi
And the leader in the survey of the most popular mangakas is the famous Hideaki Sorachi, who had nearly 200 more nominations than the second place, with 746, which makes it clear how popular he is in this survey.
He was born on May 25, 1979, and his fame was largely earned through his manga Gintama, and we are talking about a work that has been written since December 8, 2003. And this manga has already sold 50 million copies in Japan as of May 2016.
