Doge is a slang term used to refer to a dog, I think everyone knows that. Around 2013, funny images started appearing with monologues and funny, serious, sarcastic captions… in various colors written in Comic Sans font. Thus, the famous term Doge emerged along with a viral swarm of funny memes related to these Shiba Inu dogs.
For those who don’t know, a Shiba Inu is a Japanese dog breed that is quite bold, independent, and full of self-confidence. The term used in the meme seems to have first appeared on June 24, 2005, in a puppet show called Homestar Runner. In the episode “Biz Cas Fri 1,” Homestar calls Strong Bad his “doge“.
How did the doge meme originate and spread?
We know how the word doge originated, now we need to understand how the Shiba Inu fits into this story and how it spread. Everything started on February 23, 2010, when the teacher, Atsuko Sato, from a kindergarten in Japan, published several photos of her dog named Kabosu on her personal blog. The photo that stood out and went viral showed the dog sitting on a sofa while looking sideways at the camera with raised eyebrows.
In 2013, another dog of the same breed named Suki, from photographer Jonathan Fleming, went viral and boosted the meme. Everything started to spread in 2010 when the photo of Kabosu was posted on reddit with the title LMBO LOOK @ THIS FUKKIN DOGE. On tumblr, the term gained more traction when a user posted an audio from a game about finding doge. The audio received 33,000 notes in July 2013. Thus, a blog called YourDailyDoge was created, battle videos of Pokemon were uploaded, and soon after, many people began sharing photos of dogs in different outfits on 4chan.

The truth is that various memes and funny images involving dogs have received the title of doge. Even a subreddit was created for sharing photos of Shiba Inu. Companies created patents, various memes were created involving not only comedies but also various monologues and even politics. Below we will see some curiosities involving this meme:

- A little joke about April Fool’s says that the original dog died and fooled everyone, making waves on the internet;
