Fairy Tail, if you don't know it yet, this is the right place. The spoilers stay at the end, and they are mild, so the story and the curiosities come first. The original manga ended on July 26, 2017, and its television series ended on September 29, 2019. The sequel manga, Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest, is the part still being published.

Fairy Tail: synopsis

The story is set in Fiore, where magic is an ordinary part of life. Guilds sit in the middle of that work. Wizards meet there, take job requests, and get paid for the dangerous ones. Fairy Tail stands out as a place of strength, spirit, and family.

Lucy Heartfilia is a teenage wizard, and her dream is to become a full member by joining that famous guild. On the road she meets Natsu Dragneel and his partner Happy, who are searching for Natsu's adoptive father, the dragon Igneel.

A man named Bora tricks Lucy and tries to carry her off. Natsu stops him, tells her that he belongs to Fairy Tail, and invites her to join. At the guild she meets the ice wizard Gray Fullbuster and Erza Scarlet, the swordswoman who swaps armor in the middle of a fight. Together they take on enemies, help people, and pick up new friends.

Information and details

Fairy Tail is a manga written and illustrated by Hiro Mashima. It ran in Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine from August 2, 2006, to July 26, 2017. Kodansha collected the 545 chapters into 63 tankōbon volumes, and the last volume came out on November 17, 2017. By February 2020 the manga had over 72 million copies in print.

In North America, Del Rey Manga began the English edition in March 2008 and carried it through volume 12, released in September 2010. Kodansha USA took over the license in December 2010 and published the final volume on January 23, 2018. Funimation licensed the television series for the same market, and the English dub later moved to Crunchyroll.

The first anime, animated by A-1 Pictures and Satelight, aired on TV Tokyo from October 12, 2009, to March 30, 2013. A second series, from A-1 Pictures and Bridge, aired from April 5, 2014, to March 26, 2016. The final season, from A-1 Pictures, Bridge, and CloverWorks, aired from October 7, 2018, to September 29, 2019. Together those runs make 328 episodes.

Nine OVAs were released on DVD with limited editions of the manga. Two films sit outside that count: Fairy Tail the Movie: Phoenix Priestess, in Japanese theaters on August 18, 2012, and Fairy Tail: Dragon Cry, on May 6, 2017.

The sequel manga, Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest, is storyboarded by Mashima and drawn by Atsuo Ueda. It launched on Kodansha's Magazine Pocket app on July 25, 2018. As of August 2026, 24 volumes were out and the manga was still running. J.C.Staff adapted it into 25 episodes, broadcast on TV Tokyo from July 7, 2024, to January 5, 2025, and Crunchyroll streamed that season outside Asia. The drawn story continues past those episodes.

For the 20th anniversary, Weekly Shōnen Magazine ran a short series, Fairy Tail Re:Fantasia, from July 29 to September 30, 2026. Kodansha collected it in one volume on October 16, 2026.

Curiosities about Fairy Tail

Lucy from the Beatles

Hiro Mashima took Lucy's first name from the Beatles song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds."

Lucy's ideal boyfriend

Early in the series, Lucy kept a list of ideal boyfriends. Siegrain, who is also Jellal, sat at the top.

Three characters, one voice

Ur, Ultear, and Virgo are voiced by the same seiyuu, Miyuki Sawashiro.

Natsu means summer

Natsu is the Japanese word for summer. Mashima picked it because Western fantasy names would have felt unfamiliar to his Japanese readers.

Makarov after Tenrou

Acnologia attacks during the exam on Tenrou Island, and the guild treats Makarov and that team as dead. They come back seven years later. Our dear guild master is one more name on a long list of characters who look finished and then walk back in.

From cards to keys

Lucy was originally going to fight with cards. Mashima changed them to keys for her celestial spirits, because cards used as weapons were already common in other series.

Fairy Tale, then Fairy Tail

The title began as Fairy Tale. Mashima changed Tale to Tail, after a fairy's tail, and left open whether that tail would turn out to matter.

Ultear's long stay

Ultear stays on the enemy side across Galuna Island, the Tower of Heaven, and Tenrou Island. She switches sides after that stretch.

Titania, queen of the fairies

Erza Scarlet's title is Titania. That is the name of the fairy queen in Shakespeare's play A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Spoilers

The late story fits in a few words. Zeref is Natsu's older brother. About 400 years before the guild we follow, Natsu died young, and Zeref tried to bring him back. In that past, Igneel took the boy in, taught him Fire Dragon Slayer magic, and sealed himself inside Natsu. Zeref and Igneel then sent him through the Eclipse Gate, a magical door that opens a rift in time, to July 7 of the year X777. Natsu woke up sure that Igneel had abandoned him.

Acnologia is the Dragon Slayer who became a dragon after killing so many of them. Calm down. He kills Igneel later, in front of Natsu, after Igneel comes back out of that body. There is a lot of fighting around that. The rest isn't worth a full retelling. Those last fights lean on power-ups that are quite easy to predict. The final season has already aired this part.

Anyway, this is the story of Fairy Tail. The clichés are loud, sometimes almost childish, and there is a good plot under them. The weak spot is the serious moment of tension.
