What is Japan's piracy like?

Piracy is present everywhere, on public roads, on the internet, in stores and even with street vendors, that is, it is not possible to get rid of products that are illegal under the law.

In a way we contribute to piracy, either directly or indirectly. In both cases there are punishments and in Japan the punishments are very severe and rigid. Therefore, those who practice piracy in Japan hope not to be caught, as the punishment is not as pleasant as in Brazil.

Although the Japanese try their best to avoid piracy. There is a large flow of pirated products in Japan, mainly in online services. The internet is one of the most effective ways to find the owners of pirated products.

online piracy

One of the biggest means of pirate distribution in the world is the internet. Making several countries lose investments and revenue from official shopping locations. This causes your series, movie, manga, anime... to lose money that could ensure new ads, seasons, and licensed products.

In one year, governments lose more than R$10 Billions due to piracy and other illegal means. This causes laws to be created and investigations to be carried out, in search of sites and people who distribute pirated products.

Usually only people are victims of punishment, but when sites are exclusive to piracy or that have constant uploads of pirated files, the site also becomes a victim of punishment, the most common being permanent or temporary removal.

Japanese laws for piracy

As already mentioned, Japanese laws are severe and rigid, something totally different from Brazil. Investigations are often done all at once, so more people are arrested and files are removed quickly.

The most recent Japanese law against piracy is the law that came into force on October 1, 2012. This law is aimed at introducing strict punishments and even imprisonment.

The law is mainly valid against piracy of products that are protected by copyright. At first many web browsers were afraid to even watch videos on youtube, but over time many doubts were clarified.

The law provides for up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to 10 million yen (R$ 320 thousand) for the distributor of pirated products. For those who download, the law provides for up to 2 years in prison and a fine of up to 2 million yen (R$65 thousand).

The law is somewhat vague and can lead to websites and people being unfairly accused. Making some people have to resort to legal remedies.

care

Japanese users need to be especially careful with websites and files that have been and are uploaded illegally. Beware of sites that don't actually have something that proves they have the copyright to the content.

Watching videos on Youtube is not considered illegal, as the site uses Streaming and not downloads.

Torrent service is a problem for the law, as they are difficult to enforce. But in this case, the most likely thing to happen is the site that makes the downloads available to be punished.

How is piracy in Japan?

The article is still halfway through, but we recommend also reading:

Anime, the biggest targets of piracy

About 300 anime are released each year, whether sequels or premieres, anime are released by seasons, there are 4 each year. Anime has two versions, the TV versions and the BD (Blu-Ray) versions. The TV versions are those that air on Japanese TV, while the BD is released after the anime ends. The BD version has a better quality, has no censorship and has some specials and OVAs.

BD's are the source of income for anime, if it has good sales it is very likely that it will have new seasons. If you don't buy the original products, you run the risk of not having a new season of your favorite anime.

Ever heard of Fansubs? Fansubs are sites that take Raw anime and translate them into another language, in our case, Portuguese. Fansubs are not really legal, as they are responsible for a large part of anime piracy.

In 2014, about R$2.5 billion were not collected due to piracy, only in otaku products.

With this post, I would like all those who can afford it, to be able to buy original products! Well, it will help you to have your sequels!
