Monster Girls – Anime with monster or anthropomorphic girls

A genre of anime and manga that has become quite popular lately has been monster girls. They are anime that the characters are half human and half monsters, yokai, animal, alien, robot or that has its non-human half.

It is common for most anime to have some character that is not 100% human, sometimes they have cat tails and ears, horns or robotic pieces. The name of this genus in Japanese is Gijinka [擬人化] which means anthropomorphic.

Gijinka - Anthropomorphic characters

Gijinka can refer to any character that mixes with non-human individuals, including inanimate objects, brands or concepts. A small example is in the characters moe created to represent Mac or Windows.

Anthropomorphism has been present since prehistory and has a strong connection in ancient religions and mythologies, including the shinto in Japan. On the internet, one of the first characters Moe Gijinka that appeared was iMac Girl in 1998.

Even 100% human characters who do some transformation as in the case of Cristo-chan, Ebola-chan, Starbucks-chan, Ipo-chan, Terra-chan and Clorox-chan classify as a Gijinka.

The pokemons were pioneers in transforming themselves into Moe Gijinka characters. A recent case was also written on our blog, the famous character Bowsette. The most popular anthropomorphic animals in anime are cats and foxes.

In ancient cultures, non-human characters were also sensual and seduced boys. Even in Japan there is a legend of a spider who turns into a seductive woman and marries a samurai.

Robotic, alien characters with cat parts and other animals are common, but there are cases of slime girls, snake girl, centaur, dragon, flower, zombie, vampire and the mermaid cliché.

Kemonomimi and Nekomimi

Another super popular way to represent monster girls in anime and manga is using animal ears. These ears are often called Kemonomimi. The most popular are the ears of cats called nekomimi.

Generally the Japanese represent these creatures using only ears, tail and feet, without removing the human characteristics. They are easy to spread, because the animal's characteristics can be easily transmitted simply by drawing the ears.

Pointed ears are by far the most common type, having been associated with everything from demons, elves, magical fairies and even Vulcans. In Japan, the ability to hear very well is called jigokumimi, which translates as “ears of hell”.

Some examples of characters with cat ears are:
