Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions: Series Guide and Season 3 Status

Yuuta Togashi has spent years trying to bury one spectacularly embarrassing chapter of his life: his days as the Dark Flame Master. Then Rikka Takanashi crosses his path with an eyepatch, imaginary battles, and no interest in acting ordinary. That collision gives Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions! its spark: a school romance that can be absurd one minute and unexpectedly gentle the next.

Its Japanese title, Chūnibyō demo Koi ga Shitai! (中二病でも恋がしたい!), turns a familiar teenage embarrassment into the starting point for Yuuta and Rikka’s relationship. The series enjoys the dramatic poses and invented names, but it also lets its characters be awkward, lonely, loyal, and sincere.

What is Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions about?

Yuuta enters high school determined to live quietly and never mention the grandiose persona he adopted in middle school. Rikka, a new classmate who calls herself the bearer of the Wicked Eye, recognizes that old side of him immediately. Her insistence on treating ordinary life as a secret mission keeps pulling Yuuta back into the kind of behavior he wanted to forget.

That premise makes room for comedy, but the story works because the characters do not remain jokes. Rikka’s fantasy language gives her a way to face feelings she cannot easily say aloud, while Yuuta slowly learns that growing up does not have to mean treating every earnest part of himself as a mistake. Shinka Nibutani, Kumin Tsuyuri, Sanae Dekomori, and the rest of their circle bring their own versions of embarrassment and make-believe into the mix.

Anime and light novel basics

The original story began as a Kyoto Animation light novel series. Kyoto Animation later produced the television anime, with the first season airing from October to December 2012. It is a 12-episode school romantic comedy, built around Yuuta and Rikka rather than a large fantasy world.

The follow-up television season is Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions -Heart Throb-, also known as Ren. It aired from January to March 2014 and continues the characters’ school life after the first season. Kyoto Animation’s official catalogue also lists the 2018 film Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions! -Take On Me-.

Best watch order

For the main story, the easiest order is straightforward:

There are also short episodes, original video animations, and Rikka Version, a recap film centered on Rikka’s perspective. They are worthwhile if you enjoy the cast and want extra time with them, but the three titles above carry the main progression of Yuuta and Rikka’s relationship.

Is there a Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions Season 3?

No third television season has been officially announced. Kyoto Animation’s current works catalogue lists the two television seasons and Take On Me as the later anime project for the series; the official series pages do not provide a Season 3 title, release date, trailer, episode count, or production notice.

As of July 2026, a third season has no official confirmation. The 2018 film is the newest announced animated entry listed by Kyoto Animation for this story.

That is different from saying that another project can never happen. Anime announcements can arrive without much warning, and a long gap is not proof by itself. Until Kyoto Animation or the official series site announces a new production, however, posters, edited clips, release-date lists, and social-media rumors should not be treated as confirmation.

Does Take On Me continue the anime?

Yes. Take On Me belongs after the second television season, not before it. It returns to Yuuta and Rikka after the events of Heart Throb- and is the right final stop for viewers who want the latest animated chapter currently available.

The film matters because the series is not only about the joke of pretending to wield supernatural powers. Yuuta and Rikka’s bond has always been shaped by the gap between what they perform and what they can admit. Watching the film after both seasons gives that development its proper context.

Why the series remains easy to revisit

Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions! has an unusually warm view of adolescent awkwardness. Yuuta is not simply punished for his old behavior, and Rikka is not reduced to a quirky gimmick. Their friends tease one another, overplay their imaginary battles, and still show up when someone needs support.

Kyoto Animation’s expressive character animation helps sell both sides of the story: the sudden, elaborate flights of fantasy and the quieter pauses after them. If you are looking for a school romance with comedy, a memorable ensemble, and a little more emotional weight than its first jokes suggest, it remains a rewarding watch from beginning to end.
