Fans borrowed overpowered — or just OP — from games, and they use it when a lead sits so far above the rest of the cast that a fair fight barely exists. The punchline is not always a haymaker. Sometimes it is a notebook. Sometimes it is a bored hero who already finished the training montage.
This list gathers 20 anime where the protagonist breaks the scale of their own story. The point is not a cosmic ranking of who would win a crossover. It is the pleasure of watching someone too strong, too clever, or too broken for the world they were dropped into.

With his brother Alphonse, who has a full suit of armor instead of a human body, he travels across the country in search of the Philosopher's Stone, which can grant them the ability to recover their bodies. For more on the brothers' journey, see our Fullmetal Alchemist guide.

5. Sword Art Online
Sword Art Online follows the story of Kirito, a video game player who is trapped in a virtual world where he is forced to fight for his survival.
He is incredibly skilled with a sword and is able to face enemies much stronger than him, thanks to his agility and intelligence.
In addition, he possesses special abilities that allow him to fight against higher-level bosses, which is uncommon for lower-level players. Kirito fights to escape the virtual world and return to the real world. If you like stories that treat a game as a second life, our MMORPG anime list goes further into that lane.

Although Light does not have superhuman physical abilities, he is incredibly intelligent and is able to use his mind to manipulate his enemies and overcome challenges. He takes the guild's name, Ainz Ooal Gown, and carries a max-level undead mage's toolkit: high-tier spells, undead creation, and the authority of Nazarick. The fantasy is not that he rewrites the world's code. It is that almost nobody in the new world can answer a player who already finished the old one. If you are waiting on more of that story, we also tracked when Overlord season 5 might arrive.
