Chinese anime are often underestimated. In some cases, that skepticism is understandable, but not every title deserves it. Here I want to highlight a few Chinese anime that are genuinely worth watching.
Of course, some of them will not be as polished as the best Japanese anime. Comparing an established market with a newcomer almost always creates a huge gap. China is still growing in this space, but it keeps investing and improving at an impressive pace.
It probably will not take forever before Chinese animation reaches a level that can compete with Japan more consistently. Nobody knows exactly when that will happen. But instead of speculating, let's get to the point.
Some people dismiss Chinese anime because they assume many of them are dubbed in Chinese and therefore feel unfamiliar. In reality, many of these series are released in Japan in Japanese, and not directly in China.
Hitori no shita
One day, while on his way to visit his grandfather's grave, Zhang Chulan is attacked by zombies in a cemetery. In the middle of that situation, he is saved by a mysterious girl who uses kitchen knives to take out the enemies.
The girl tells the relieved Chulan to face his problems and leave. Later, however, Chulan meets that same girl again at his university. From that moment on, Zhang Chulan becomes connected to her for several reasons, and as time passes he realizes that the bond between them is much stronger than it first appeared.
Comment on the Chinese anime Hitori no shita
With two seasons, this is an anime that can stand alongside some of the best Japanese series. That is only my opinion, of course, so if you disagree, feel free to comment. The animation is noticeably better than in most Japanese shows.
Quanzhi fashi
The protagonist, Mo Fan, wakes up for no clear reason in a world that is very different from the one he knows. His school is now a magic academy that encourages everyone to become powerful mages. Outside the city, wild magical beasts and monsters attack humans. It is a world with advanced science and advanced magic.
Even so, his ambitions in life and his financial situation remain the same. He is one of society's underdogs, with a struggling father and a disabled sister. Then Mo Fan discovers that while everyone else can only master one element, he can do much more.

Comment on the Chinese anime Quanzhi fashi
This is the typical anime that only appeals to people who enjoy stories where the protagonist goes through absurd power growth. Since I am one of those people, I liked it a lot. I am usually against power growth just because the protagonist is special, but that is not the case here, which is why I recommend it.
The King’s Avatar
Ye Xiu is the best player in the online multiplayer game Glory and is even called the "Battle God" because of his skills and contribution to the game. Despite everything he has achieved, he is forced out of the team and has to leave his career as a player behind.
He does not accept giving up, though, and begins his comeback by taking a job at a cyber cafe nearby. When Glory launches its tenth server, he enters the game again, this time using a new character named "Lord Grim".
Comment on the Chinese anime The King’s Avatar
When people talk about Chinese anime, this is probably the best known of them all. The animation is good, although the story feels a little thin in some places. Maybe the original novel explains it better, but here the focus is mainly on the action scenes, which I thought were very good.
Cupid’s chocolates
Jiang Haoyi, a seemingly normal student, suddenly finds himself in trouble when he becomes the center of a harem. For many people that sounds like a dream, but for him it is a major problem.
That happens after he eats a chocolate cake together with the other girls who are now part of his harem. After that, they begin confessing their feelings to him, but he does not really understand what is happening.
Comment on the Chinese anime Cupid’s chocolates
Honestly, I do not know why someone would think having a harem is a bad thing. But if that is how he feels, I cannot change it. I do have to admit that he has several traits that make him a solid protagonist, such as intelligence and attitude. It is a shame that the story is not as strong as the animation.
Fox Spirit Matchmaker
The anime tells the story of Bai Yuechu, a powerful human Taoist who wants to break free from the ruler of the League, Yi Qi Dao, and Tushan Susu, a small and innocent fox spirit who dreams of becoming a famous matchmaker despite being known as a huge trickster.
After Susu literally falls from the roof and enters his life, Yuechu is pulled in to help reunite two separated lovers: Prince Fan Yun Fei and his reincarnated beloved, Li Xueyang.
However, not everyone wants them to be reunited, including Xueyang herself. Thrown together by fate, Yuechu and Susu will discover who they really are. And also who they used to be.
Comment on the Chinese anime Fox Spirit Matchmaker
When an anime has a good story but tells it badly, it often ends up feeling weak. This one, however, has such a strong core idea that it does not become bad; it ends up as a middling anime instead. My view is that the story is good but could have been much better, and it is worth noting that true love is always beautiful.

What do you think about Chinese anime?
Even though they are still underestimated, the Chinese industry is growing quickly and will probably become a global power before long. Imagine Chinese anime airing on television around the world, just like Pokémon or Dragon Ball.
Of course, the quality still needs to improve and the talent involved will need to keep rising. But China loves competing in many sectors, including entertainment, and it will keep investing to make that happen.
That is it for this article. I hope you enjoyed reading it. And do not forget to share it on social media, because that helps a lot. If you have questions, suggestions or criticism, feel free to leave a comment.
