Who doesn't remember the song from Shingeki no Kyojin where they sing ♪sasageyo! sasageyo!♪? It's the opening theme of the second season called Shinzou wo sasageyo which literally means put your heart out. In this article, we'll delve into these words and understand the true meaning of sasageyo!

What does Sasageyo mean in Japanese?

Sasageyo is actually a godan verb sasagu [捧ぐ] that means to lift, hold, hold up (above eye level). Its other meaning involves to give, offer, dedicate, devote, sacrifice, and commit.

The verb in the word sasageyo is in the form sasageru [捧げる], a transitive verb in the imperative form. The fact that the word has the ending yo [よ] indicates the speaker's emphasis, warning and exclamation.

These verbs have implications of worship, with probable origins in royal sacrifices or offerings to the gods. In fact, one of the kanji present is hou [奉] which is often used in religious words such as houshi [奉仕] meaning church and houshisha [奉仕者] meaning religious minister.

The act of lifting up or above the eyes may remind us of the scene where the monkey Rafiki lifts Simba onto the King's Rock in the movie Lion King and subsequent films. The verb also has a simple past tense form sasaida [捧いだ] which means raised.

Generally, the verb sasageyo is always used in Shinto ceremonies when offering sacrifices, offering to the gods or rituals such as tamagushi. This verb can even refer to a literal or figurative sacrifice to something or a god.

Shinzou wo sasageyo - meaning

What does Shinzou wo Sasageyo mean?

Shinzou [心臓] literally means heart in Japanese in the physical or anatomical sense. I can't understand why they chose such a literal word for the Titans' song. The more common word to refer to the symbolic heart and even the physical one is Kokoro.

I believe that the choice of Shinzou is due to the fact that it more closely matches the word sasageyo and also conveys a literal idea of sacrifice, since in the story of the titans they are literally sacrificing themselves. A controversial choice but one that makes total sense with the anime.

Now that we've examined the meaning of both words, we can try to fit them together. They can be translated in different ways, but their meaning is practically the same. In addition to give me your heart we can understand it as give me your heart.

Other ways to translate are:

  • Sacrifice your heart!
  • Offer your heart!
  • Dedicate your heart!
  • Give your heart away!
