Many people had their first contact with Japanese animations through Brazilian open TV. Yes, there was a time when animes were aired in Brazil. And for a generation of people, this was the only way to watch and follow animes. Animes arrived in Brazil around the 1960s, with the anime Homem de aço being one of the first to be broadcast.

In 1964, National Kid was broadcast, which even though it was a tokusatsu series, boosted the consumption and popularity of animes. Soon after, animes like: Speed Racer, The Princess and the Knight, Super Dínamo, Zillion, among others came here. But none of these achieved the success and taste of the majority. Then in 1970, during the Military Dictatorship, any series that featured superheroes was prohibited in Brazil.

Animes that aired on Brazilian TV

It was only in the 80s that animes started to return to Brazilian TV, mainly on Tv Manchete. In 1988, the first Brazilian event for anime and manga fans was held. But in the mid-80s, what was really popular were the tokusatsus, like Jiraya and Jaspion. But everything changed with the arrival in Brazil in 1994 of Os Cavaleiros do Zodíaco on Rede Manchete. The anime maintained high audience peaks for two years, becoming a great success and a craze of the time.

Soon other animes appeared on TV Manchete like Super Campeões, Sailor Moon, Yu Yu Hakusho and Samurai Warriors. Other Brazilian broadcasters also sought to air animes in their programming. SBT was responsible for bringing Dragon Ball, Fly o Pequeno Guerreiro and Astro Boy. Rede Record in 1999 brought Pokémon, which was very successful. Soon, Globo, to not fall behind its competitors, broadcasted Digimon, Beyblade, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Dragon Ball Z and many others.

Animes that aired on Brazilian TV

But in early 2001, animes began to lose their audience in Brazil. Much due to the strong censorship they suffered and for not airing the episodes in the correct chronology. The increase and popularity of the internet also contributed somewhat to the decrease of animes on Brazilian TV. Even so, some animes during that time were very successful like Hantaro, Zatch Bell, Naruto, One Piece, Hunter x Hunter, and Super Onze. Soon the number of animes began to decrease, but many are grateful and proud to have experienced the golden age of animes on Brazilian TV.
