The popularity of anime has grown significantly in recent years, winning fans of all ages around the world. However, for some people of faith, the question arises: can watching anime be considered a sin from a biblical perspective? This article seeks to analyze Christian principles to answer this question clearly and balancedly.

Even religions that are known for strictly following biblical principles, such as the Jehovah’s Witnesses, often have thousands of anime fans. From a biblical standpoint, there is no problem in watching anime, as you will see throughout this article.

If you are a religious parent and are concerned about the effects of anime on your children, know that anime can be a healthy alternative, helping to steer them away from more serious problems in adolescence. Being too strict can be dangerous. Remember that children are like springs: if you squeeze them too much, they may end up bouncing away.

Some people are too strict

The Bible encourages us to be balanced and reasonable in our actions. In Philippians 4:5, we read: “Let your gentleness be known to all men”. This reminds us that excessive rigidity can create barriers, while discernment and reasonableness promote a healthy relationship with God and family.

Anime, like any other form of entertainment, is not inherently good or bad. It all depends on the content and the impact it has on our lives. The problem arises when we judge something without knowledge, creating rules that go beyond what the Bible teaches.

Parents, in particular, need to balance supervision and freedom. When we prohibit something without dialogue or explanation, we risk emotionally distancing our children. Instead, watching anime together can be a way to better understand what your children like and use it as an opportunity to teach Christian values.

Cultural issues should not conflict with religion

When visiting Christian brothers in Japan, it is common to see how well they cope with the cultural challenges around them. Anime is part of daily life in Japan, and many Japanese Christians consume it with discernment, without compromising their faith.

The Bible does not condemn cultural expressions. In Acts 10:15, God teaches Peter that nothing created by Him should be considered impure. This helps us understand that cultural differences do not need to be seen as threats to our spirituality.

Anime is, above all, an expression of Japanese culture, and rejecting it for that reason can be unfair. Many convey universal messages, such as courage, friendship, and sacrifice, which can even reinforce biblical principles. When approached with discernment, anime does not have to be a problem for faith.

Can a Christian watch Shounen?

The shounen genre is one of the most popular in the anime universe, with stories full of action, friendship, and overcoming challenges. Titles like Naruto, Dragon Ball, and One Piece have won fans worldwide, including many Christians. But is watching shounen appropriate for those who wish to live according to biblical principles? Let’s analyze this genre and how it relates to the Christian faith.

Although the Bible advises us to avoid violent and supernatural content, it is up to each individual to decide with their conscience what they should or should not watch. Denying someone the opportunity to watch action scenes for fear that such scenes will make them desensitized to violence can have a reverse effect.

Some issues that from a Western perspective may seem supernatural can often be viewed as cultural. It is an exaggeration to imagine that by watching something supernatural, a demon will enter our home; that does not exist.

All material we consume can unconsciously harm us over time by influencing our thoughts, not because there is a demon in our house, especially since they have more important things to do.

The Danger of the Supernatural in Anime

The Bible advised the Israelites to stay away from supernatural rituals or to burn their books of magic because they are directly linked. This is quite different from watching an anime where a person is born in a fantasy world.

Of course, watching such supernatural, immoral, or violent things can, in the long run, diminish our faith in the scriptures. I personally witnessed this happen with a friend who liked some anime with magic, and later distanced herself from the scriptures and became involved in Candomblé.

Of course, this reflects more on her lack of faith in the Bible and other social problems than on anime. The main reason young people and others lose faith in the Bible is due to religious lies, religious extremism, and especially the extreme struggle and difficulty of following the moral and honesty laws of the Bible.

Anime will increase your faith

It is a constant struggle to resist the temptations of this system, and I assure you that anime will be a great ally in this battle to resist the pressures of the world! Anime and games can keep your children away from drugs, bad friendships, and making the mistakes of youth.

This happens because Japanese standards are quite high, so the influence your child will have from anime characters will help them to be smarter, to reflect more on life and society.

Most anime makes viewers think and reflect on life, while most other Western content and social media only make them think about sex, debauchery, violence, and misfortune.
