Udo Jingu Sanctuary in Miyazaki

Udo Shrine (鵜戸神宮, Udo Jingū) is located on the south coast of Nichinan City in Miyazaki Prefecture. It was dedicated to Yamasachihiko, the father of Emperor Jimmu, the first Emperor of Japan, according to the traditional succession list.

This sanctuary is located in a cave on the side of a cliff overlooking the ocean and therefore enjoys spectacular views. Although it is unclear whether Emperor Jimmu was born or visited this place, some say that the cave's breast-shaped rocks nursed the Emperor.

Outside the cave is a terrace overlooking the ocean. Between the stones, there is a target marked by a rope on which people try to throw small undama, or lucky balls.

Some believe that drinking the water that oozes from these stones is beneficial for pregnancy. This sanctuary is also a lucky spot for couples and honeymooners.
