Twelve wooden keeps still standing from the Edo period. The rest: twentieth-century concrete, stone on a ridge, a palace with no tower. Hiroshima shut its keep in 2026; Hirosaki, Maruoka and Gifu are under works too. The map marks what you can still climb.
