    "Hakujaden", also known as "The White Serpent" or "Panda and the White Serpent", is a Japanese animated film from 1958 directed by Taiji Yabushita. The story is based on a Chinese legend and follows a young man named Xu-Xian who falls in love with a serpent queen transformed into a woman. In the final events of the story, the true form of the serpent queen is revealed and she returns to her original form. Xu-Xian is devastated to discover the true identity of his beloved. However, the serpent queen still harbors feelings for him and decides to sacrifice herself to prevent further harm. She transforms into a spiral of smoke, disappearing and leaving Xu-Xian alone and heartbroken.
