Shiki

Synopsis: Life is idyllic and unpretentious in the small town of Sotoba, a simple place where everyone knows everyone. However, the tragedy occurs when Megumi Shimizu, a young woman with high aspirations, unexpectedly dies of an unnamed disease. In the torrid months of summer, as the most inexplicable deaths arise around the village, the city doctor - Toshio Ozaki - leads to suspect that something more ominous than a mere disease is at stake.

Toshio joins Natsuno Yuuki, an apathetic and distant teenager, and the brothers Kaori and Akira Tanaka, two of Megumi's friends, to unravel the dark mystery behind the deaths in Sotoba. With their efforts combined, the investigation leads them to a mysterious secret regarding the new family in the Kanemasa mansion.

    At the end of Shiki's manga, the final battle between vampires and humans reaches their climax. However, humans' victory is ephemeral, as the last scene shows that vampires are still alive and preparing to take revenge. The ending is quite dark and leaves open the possibility of a sequel.
