Synopsis: When computers begin to look human, can love remain the same?

Hideki Motosuwa is a young country boy who is studying a lot to enter college. Coming from a bad background, he can barely pay expenses, let alone the latest fashion: persocoms, personal computers that look exactly with humans. One night, as he returned home, he finds an abandoned person. After taking her home and being able to activate it, she seems to be defective, because she can only say a word "Chii", which eventually becomes her name. Unlike other persons, however, Chii cannot download information on his hard drive, so Hideki decides to teach her over the world as he studied for college admission tests at the same time.

Together with his friends, Hideki tries to unravel the mystery of Chii, which can be a "chobit", an urban legend about special units that have real human emotions and thoughts and love for their owner. But can romance flourish between a persocom and a human?
