Synopsis:

Neon Genesis Evangelion (Shinseiki Evangelion) follows the struggle of gigantic biomechanical beings known as Evangelions, operated by teenage pilots, against entities known as Angels that attack the fortified city of Tokyo-3. The series mixes intense mecha combat with psychological drama, exploring the consequences of the Second Impact, the decisions of the NERV organization, and the weight of personal choices in a world on the brink of collapse.

As the battles for the future of humanity occur in the underground of NERV’s HQ, themes such as identity, isolation, and the attempt to repair collective traumas emerge through confrontations, symbolic sequences, and the enigma of the Human Instrumentality Project.

Shinseiki Evangelion Universe

The main setting is Tokyo-3, a fortified city designed to function as a battleground against the attacks of the Angels: retractable streets, protective barriers, and underground structures that transform the urban space into military strategy. Civilian everyday life alternates between school routines and abrupt attack sirens, creating an atmosphere of fragile normalcy and permanent vigilance.

Institutions and Practical Rules

NERV operates as the main institution: an underground headquarters with the Geofront and facilities for launching the Evangelions, where military and scientific decisions overlap public life. In parallel, the shadow of SEELE and international organizations influence policies and strategic commands. Social life is regulated by emergency protocols, military orders, and centralized communication through radios and sound alerts.

  • Recurring spaces: the defensive surface of Tokyo-3, NERV/Geofront’s underground HQ, and the control rooms where synchronizations and battles are monitored.
  • Symbolic objects: entry plugs, synchronization suits, umbilical cables of the Evas, and the crosses and explosions that mark victories against the Angels.
  • Forms of coexistence: there is pragmatic coexistence between civilians and military personnel — schools continue to operate despite threats; selected teenagers face institutional pressure to pilot; therapy and psychological observation are routine for coping with trauma.
  • Culture and social pressure: the post-Second Impact creates an environment of collective fear, imposed heroism, and emotional isolation. Expectations of sacrifice and scientific efficiency shape behaviors in command centers and among the residents of Tokyo-3.

Summary of Shinseiki Evangelion

  • Context: After the cataclysmic Second Impact, the world lives under the threat of new attacks. The fortified city of Tokyo-3 and the NERV organization are established to defend humanity.
  • Call of the pilot: A young person is called to pilot the Evangelion, a biomechanical mecha created to face the Angels; their arrival initiates a series of confrontations.
  • Early battles: Various Angels attack Tokyo-3; the Evangelions take action, revealing psychic synchronization, entry suits, and the operation of the entry plugs and umbilical cables.
  • Discoveries about the Evas: It is revealed that the Evangelions are not just conventional machines, but entities with biological aspects and deep connections to secret projects in the underground of NERV’s HQ.
  • Psychological pressure: The battles and military routine create emotional strain on the pilots; therapy sessions, isolation, and internal conflicts become central to the unfolding story.
  • Escalation of the conflict: As more Angels attack, NERV and external factions (such as SEELE) make increasingly drastic decisions to advance their plans related to the Human Instrumentality Project.
  • Final intervention of a humanoid Angel: A final Angel with a direct connection to the protagonist emerges, forcing a personal decision that accelerates events toward the climax.
  • Triggering of Instrumentality/Third Impact: Climaxing events lead to the activation of the process that merges human consciousnesses (represented as a dissolution in LCL), opening the perspective on the nature of individuality and collective existence.
  • Television conclusion (ep. 25–26): The original series concludes with introspective sequences that explore psychologies and internal choices, ending with the protagonist’s acceptance of themselves.
  • Film conclusion (The End of Evangelion): The film shows the physical destruction of the HQ, the attack on NERV, the Third Impact, and Instrumentality on a global scale, followed by an ambiguous return to the physical reality where personal and collective destinies remain open and emotionally uncertain.

Shinseiki Evangelion Ending

Series Finale (episodes 25–26): The original conclusion of the series describes the process of Human Instrumentality in psychological and introspective terms. Instead of showing a physical climax, the final episodes explore the consciousnesses and identities of the protagonists within a symbolic space, where memories, fears, and desires are analyzed. In the end, the narrative culminates in individual acceptance and the idea of reconstructing the self, with a final scene celebrating the protagonist’s choice to exist as an individual.

The film The End of Evangelion: Offers an external and graphic resolution of the events omitted from the TV: the offensive against the HQ of NERV, the triggering of the Third Impact, and the activation of the Human Instrumentality Project on a global scale. The film depicts the physical destruction, the merging of consciousnesses in a sea of LCL, and the protagonist’s intimate experience facing the choice between the dissolution of individual barriers and the return to human separation. In the end, after Instrumentality, there is an ambiguous return to physical reality: the protagonist wakes up in a devastated world, and a final scene with another survivor leaves the ending open and emotionally ambiguous, without a definitive answer about the future of humanity.
