In 86 —Eighty Six— the Republic of San Magnolia proclaims a war fought by machines, but the hidden truth is brutal: young people from District 86 are forced to pilot the Juggernauts on the front lines, without rights or recognition. The Handler officer Vladilena “Lena” Milizé breaks with official indifference by establishing human contact with these pilots and closely witnessing the price of war.
The narrative follows the ongoing confrontation against the enemy known as Legion, military operations in the battlefields, and the bonds forged between those who command from a distance and those who die in the trenches. Among strategies, sacrifices, and moral questioning, 86 explores discrimination, duty, and humanity in a technological and ruthless conflict.

86 Universe
The story takes place in the Republic of San Magnolia, a state that maintains a public view of a drone war while employing the system of the “86”: a segregated population in District 86 sent as real crew members of the Juggernauts. This social device transforms citizenship, forced labor, and exclusion into driving forces of the conflict.
Recurring environments and spaces
- District 86: ghettos and camps where young conscripts live in precarious conditions before being sent to the front.
- Battlefield: open fields, trenches, and areas taken by conflict with Legion, where the Juggernauts operate and where deadly missions occur.
- Capital command centers: military facilities, control rooms, and terminals used by the Handlers to remotely direct operations and transmit orders via radio.
- Cockpits and equipment: the control posts inside combat vehicles (Juggernauts), radios/earpieces, and signals that connect pilots and Handlers, carrying symbolic weight in communication between separated worlds.
Institutions and practical rules
- Militarized government of the Republic: administers the war, produces propaganda, and maintains the legal and social distinction between citizens and the 86.
- Military force and Handlers system: structure that delegates command remotely (Handlers) and execution to the 86; the institutional separation between capital and front shapes behaviors and decisions.
Behavior, communication, and social pressures
- Official communication occurs through institutional means and military radio; Handlers speak through terminals and earpieces, while the 86 respond from the front under constant risk.
- Social pressure crosses negligence and stigmatization: the 86 are treated as disposable tools, shaping survival routines, forced silences, and codes of camaraderie among the conscripts.
- Recurring objects — letters, improvised badges, and the Juggernauts themselves — function as symbols of the value (or lack thereof) attributed to the lives of the 86 and the moral distance between center and periphery.
Summary of 86
- World introduction: the Republic of San Magnolia publicly presents the war as automated; the system of the 86 is revealed, segregated citizens who, in practice, are sent to pilot Juggernauts.
- Presentation of the front and operations: the battlefields are shown, tactics against the enemy called Legion, and the strict routine of missions, with high casualty rates among the pilots from District 86.
- Designation of Handlers: officials in the capital operate as Handlers, commanding via radio; a Handler establishes regular contact with a surviving platoon, initiating a communication relationship that humanizes the pilots in her eyes.
- Spearhead missions: the conscript platoon carries out multiple operations against Legion, facing ambushes and loss outbreaks; the cohesion among pilots and internal leadership proves essential for survival.
- Trauma and moral character: flashbacks and combat scenes reveal suffering, personal losses, and the psychological toll on the pilots; the Handler questions official narratives and tries to act in a way that reduces dehumanization.
- Confrontations against Legion and rising tensions: the battles highlight the tactical evolution of the enemy and the vulnerability of the Republic’s strategies, exposing the rift between the capital and the 86 and leaving the situation open at the end of the presented adaptation.
