Movie tip: After the Storm

Life doesn't always go the way we planned it when we were kids. And today's recommended movie speaks very well of it. After the Storm (Umi yori mo mada fukaku) is another film directed by Japanese cinema master Hirokazu Koreeda.

A simple film with a deep theme. I talk about it better in the video below:

After the Storm Synopsis

Japan is about to receive the 23rd typhoon of the year. Matriarch Yoshiko, an elderly woman who lives alone, is visited by two children who do not usually come to her house: Ryota, a failed writer who is still suffering from a divorce and risks doing detective odd jobs, and the eldest daughter, who tries to pass for the example of the family, but also has its problems. Together, they await the arrival of the typhoon and remember the recent death of their father and husband.

What's so special about this movie?

After the Storm manages to do something that few movies can. It manages to make you empathize with the characters, from Ryota's little son to the Yoshiko matriarch. And that's why the impression it gives is that they are all characters taken directly from real life, and we, the spectators, are following their lives as if we were crashers.

The screenplay, also written by Hirokazu Koreeda, allows everyone in the film a chance to shine and show how they are affected by the film's main character, the failed Ryota.

It's hard to talk about what happens in the movie without giving the infamous spoilers, but what I can say is that actor Hiroshi Abe (Ryota) manages to create in us a sense of pity that makes us root for him even when he does wrong things, such as spending his salary betting on races instead of paying bills and child support.

After the Storm movie conclusion

After the Storm is a movie that will make you think about what you want out of life and how your actions affect others. All this bringing the customs of Japanese culture to enrich the history.

If you're one of those people who like rushed or emotional movies, After The Storm might not be for you. Even if you're not interested in the subject, I recommend checking out the movie anyway. The settings, characters and situations are all worth checking out.
