Otaku Dictionary A to Z - Most Spoken Words in Anime

Most of us Otaku we always want to learn a little bit of Japanese, or to know the meaning of certain words that they find in anime and manga. Today we leave you a great dictionary with the most heard and used words in anime and sleeves.

This word list below is a simple list, with only one of the meanings of words that can have several. Without any romanization or detailed explanation. Still, I hope you like it.

Otaku dictionary – aaz – most spoken words in anime

Otaku words starting with -A-

  • Aa, ee, um - yes (informal) "aa" is usually used by men, "um" only by women, and "ee" is used by everyone;
  • Abayo – see you later, something like see you later. Depending on the situation, it might sound a little rude;
  • Abunai - dangerous; can sometimes be translated as "Watch out!" or "Get down!";
  • Aburi – fried tofu;
  • Ahou – imbecile, asshole;
  • Ai/ aijou- love;
  • Aite - opponent;
  • Aishiteru - verb to love. Used specifically for romantic love;
  • Aisuru – love, dear, heart (in this sense);
  • Aite - opponent, literally "the one I must face";
  • Akai - red;
  • Akari – light;
  • Akirameru - surrender;
  • Aku - Bad. Samurai Jack's original enemy name;
  • Aku soku zan – literally, "eliminate evil instantly" (from Rurouni Kenshin);
  • Akuma - demon;
  • Ame - rain;
  • Anata - you;
  • Anata mo - you too;
  • Ane - eldest sister. Used when talking about the sister and she is not there; but if you are talking directly to her, or someone else's sister, you use “onee”;
  • Anisan , ani- older brother. The same rule applies as for sister, being that when speaking directly with brother the term is “onii”;
  • Ano - Huh... Hmm...;
  • Ano/sono/kono/dono/ -terms used before noun; mean, respectively: the one, this and which one?
  • Ano hi – literally, on this day
  • Ano hito - that person
  • Ano toki - That time
  • Anou - well..;
  • Ara, ore – oh, hmm? Ara is used by men and ore by women;
  • Atarashii - new
  • Arigatou gozaimasu - thank you very much. More formal than "Arigatou", but much less than Doumo Arigatou Gozaimasu;
  • Asa - morning
  • Asagohan/hirugohan/bangohan/gohan - specifically: breakfast, lunch, dinner, meal. Gohan, as many Dragonball fans may know, is cooked rice, an essential food for the Japanese;
  • Atama - head
  • Atsui – hot (temperature or heat)

Japanese words with the letter -B-

  • Baka - Idiot
  • Baka mitai - You're an ass to hurt!
  • Bakayarou - idiot, asshole
  • Bakana - impossible, absurd
  • Bakemono - monster, haunt – literally, "monstrous thing". A more appropriate term for a monster would be "obake";
  • Banzai – shout of encouragement, used in cheers (raises his arms three times while shouting this);
  • Be-da - Said while the character sticks his tongue out at someone. More or less the equivalent of "Nana-nana-nooo!"
  • Bento – the equivalent of "lunch box" or "lunchbox";
  • Betsu ni – particularly. Often translated in a negative sense, as "nothing", "not really", etc.;
  • Bishounen - handsome guy
  • Bishoujo - beautiful girl
    Bijin - beautiful woman (baby)
  • Bijutsu - art
  • Boku - I (said by man)
  • Bouzu – informal and insulting way of referring to a boy; interestingly, it is also a term for “Buddhist monk”;
  • Budo – philosophy, guide, moral codes that guide martial arts fighters;
  • Bushido – samurai code of honor. One of its fundamental principles is “death rather than dishonor”;
  • Busu - ugly woman, witch
  • Buta - pig

  • Che - irritating sound
  • Chi - blood
  • Chibi - Small
  • Chigau - different
  • Chikara - strength, power
  • Chikusho - exclamation of frustration. Like "mer...!"
  • Chikyuu - Planet Earth)
  • Chiisai - small, tiny
  • Chotto matte! - Wait! Wait a minute! (chotto means, among other things, a little, or a short time)
  • Chotto matte kudasai - Please wait;

  • Da yo ne - It's not like this?
  • Daijoubu - It's okay, or I'm fine;

  • Dojo – martial arts training room
  • Doki doki – onomatopoeia for heartbeat, can be used to express anxiety
  • Doko ni? - Where is...?
  • Dou iu koto da – what are you talking about?
  • Doush'tano? - What's going on?, What's the problem?
  • Doush'te - Why?
  • Dou Itashimashite - You are welcome;
  • Douzo - Here it is;
  • Doumo – Obrigado;
  • Doumo arigatou gozaimasu - Thank you very much (very formal);
  • Doushita _ What? What happened? What is the problem?
  • Doushite - Because? Why not? How so?, etc.

  • Furigana - those small letters that are next to the kanji in the manga balloons, and Japanese children's books too. Kind of a guide, they help to pronounce words that you don't know yet
  • Furo (or ofurô) _ typical Japanese bath
  • Furui - old
  • Futari - two people
  • Futatsu – two (used when counting things)
  • Futon - Japanese sleeping mattress
  • Fuu - wind
  • Fuzakeru - play around, do silly things

Japanese words with the letter -G-

  • Gaijin – literally, "outsider"; term used to designate foreigners. More polite would be to use "gaikofujin"
  • Gaki - young, immature person (can be translated to "Punk" or brat)
  • Gakko - school
  • Gakusei - student
  • Ganbaru, ganbatte ne! - Force! Do the best you can!
  • Ganbatte kudasai - Good luck
  • Genki – energy, literally. It can be used to designate a cheerful person, full of life;
  • Genki da ne - Cheer up, take care
  • Genki desu - I am fine
  • Getsu - month
  • Gyunyu - cow milk
  • Gyuniku - steak
  • Go - five
  • Gochisousama (deshita) – more or less "thanks for the food", used to say that you are satisfied;

  • Hentai – literally "weird person", does not necessarily mean "pervert". It seems that the misunderstanding came from the habit born in North America of using the word to designate pornographic Anime.

  • Ittemairimasu - I'm going (manner + formal and cultured)

  • Jaa – same as "dewa", only more informal
  • Already kills / kills in - See you later, bye (casual)

  • Janken, or Jan ken pon _ the famous "rock, paper, scissors";

  • Obaba - great grandmother; can also be used in a pejorative sense, to say "old woman"
  • Obake - ghost, monster

  • Obou – monk
  • Ochitsuke – Calm down!
  • Ohayo, Ohayo gozaimasu or Ohayo gozaimas - Good morning
  • Surprise - be surprised
  • Oisashiburi - How long!
  • Oiishii - delicious
  • Ojousan – girl, daughter (of someone else)
  • Oji-san - uncle; also used as a term of respect for an older man
  • Ojii-san - Grandmother; also used as a term of respect for a MUCH older man

  • Pan - bread
  • Pinchi - danger
  • Piyo - Tweet tweet
  • R King - soul, ghost; it also means zero and is the command used for people to bow on formal occasions (school, meetings, etc.)Roku –six
  • Rurouni - vagabond, wandering person. In fact, this word does not officially exist in Japanese vocabulary: it was created by the author of Rurouni Kenshin, combining rounin (samurai without a boss) and rurou (vagabond)
  • Ryoukai – message received and understood. Exchange!
  • Ryu – school or style; for example, a style of fencing;
  • Ryuu - Dragon

Words with letter -S-

  • Saa – sound with several meanings, in general when the person wants to avoid comments; in this case it could be something like: "I don't know..." "Sa", short like that, means "okay, c'mon".
  • Lonely - lonely
  • leaves – suffix, used to count years. For example, "nan-sai desu ka" means "how old are you?"
  • Saiyan no Ouji - Saiyan Prince (who will it be?);)
  • Saji - Spoon
  • Sakana - fish. Kanassa, the race exterminated by Bardock in the movie "The Father of Goku", comes from this word;
  • Sakura - Cherry Blossom
  • sama – suffix added to a name, indicating deep respect
  • Cold - cold
  • san - suffix added to noun, indicating respect, but less than sama. Equivalent to "lord", "mistress", but can also be used between siblings. Also means "3";
  • Sanpo - walk
  • Saru - monkey
  • Sasuga wa – something like "no less than expected"
  • Satou - sugar
  • Satsujinsha, satsuji - assassin
  • Know - fault. "Omae no sei da!" = It's your fault!
  • I know – suffix for planet Ex: Namek-sei or Namek=Planet Namek
