Have you ever heard of the word fan service? Do you know what that means? What is it? Why is there? In this article we will thoroughly scour the meaning of the word fan service quite present in the animes, manga, movies, series and other modern works and media.

Fan service Are ideas that the author creates in his works to please and attract more fans. Some usually do this by putting humorous, double-meaning or even sexy scenes. Many animes end up crossing the limit.

What is Fan Service? What does that mean?

The most common fan service in animeis add ecchi(sensuality), as characters with large boobs and panties to show. It may seem like something interesting to perverts, but it could end up ruining the anime or mango.

In theory, the goal of the fan service is to deliver things that fans want to see. An example of the good use of fanservice, are the references and easter eggs of other series, stories and interesting visuals. Who had just said that, unfortunately the term fan service gained negative fame because of the sensuality used to attract fans in most works.

There is no problem in making fanservice, this happens not only in animes and manga plus all the works existing on earth. The big problem is that many authors and directors have no idea what they’re doing. It can be very disturbing when used at the wrong time.

More and more fan service increases in anime. Despite attracting a lot of children and perverts, many people end up being removed from the works because of over-fan service. One of the great fan service causators are the scenes and clichéelements that drive away even more people.

How did fan service come about?

Fan service is not something created by the Japanese. The desire to please the audience is as old as fiction itself. Tributes, parodies and fourth wall break are just some of the techniques used to please and attract fans.

One of the first notable examples of fan service are the cheerleaders who appeared in 1950 in professional sports. His flashy clothes, performance and dance aimed at pleasing, entertaining and exciting fans. At the time when works with sexual appeal or even erotic scenes were rare, the fan service was an outlet used in the cinema to generate more profit.

Over time, the industry is no longer rigid in relation to the content shown in movies, comics, music and animations. This makes the media tendto have more and more sexual appeal. The term fanservice emerged in the late 1980s and was featured in the film Otaku in the video in 1991.

While some notice the fan service, others have no idea they are dominated by it. Just notice the successful Brazilian songs, both backcountry and funk are full of sexual appeal, all to please and attract the target audience. The whole world is contaminated by it, it’s not something unique to Japan.

The main mistakes with Fan Service

One of the most disturbing mistakes in fan service is to fill the chest of most female characters. Some exceed the limit of physics by adding an unreal size to the characters’ breasts. Animes where all female characters are busty to the extreme ends up moving many away from enjoying the work.

Some don’t care about it, but in several battles the female characters end up tearing clothes up in exactly inconvenient places. Some end up equiping powerful armor but that do not protect the important parts.

Some animes are impressive in terms of plot, plot and characters, but end up being spoiled for the cause of fanservice. One of these examples is the famous Sword Art Online, which began with a beautiful story and romance and was soon destroyed with a harem and scenes focusing on unnecessary parts.

Some anime/manga show panties every 5 minutes, focus the cameras in unnecessary positions just to please the young perverts. The fan service also happens to girls, where there are several scenes where men walk shirtless or force girls to ship characters.

Many characters are androgynous, perverts and strange personality just to cause humor, but ends up scaring some and making them think that Japan is a place full of crazy people. Not to mention the excess of lolis characters.

Animes like Rosario + Vampire and Kaichou wa maid-sama could win new seasons if they had not been a failure because of the fan service. As much as I like maid-sama, Usui being perfect is just a fanservice to attract ing girls.

What do you think of the fan service?

Some animes only became famous because of the fan service, even using in an exaggerated way. Animes like To love Ru, Triage X, Free!, Shokugeki in Souma, Hotd and Freezing are some examples. Outos animes like Fate/Zero received good reviews for the correct use of fanservice.

What’s your opinion on the subject? What are the animes that have had a good fan service? Which ones were spoiled because of exaggeration and sexual appeal? We would like to hear your feedback in the comments.
