Home automation, what does it mean?

The Word Domótica comes from the Latin and it is a contraction of the word (domus) that means House and the Robotic Word.

The term Home Automation refers to the process of making the activity of some manual home appliances and home systems automatic.

Since the 60s, the attempt to invent machines and systems that would facilitate domestic processes and activities is something that the industry has been looking for.

Over the years and after some attempts and inventions of systems and equipment that somehow performed some residential processes, but which in turn were gigantic and extremely expensive machines commonly used in the industry at the time.

In 1984, the term “Smart House” was actually created by an American Association of Builders in the USA. Since then the term is used until today, although at the time smart homes did not become a reality as we see today.

In 1990, the first internet-controlled appliance was a toaster still using the dial-up connection that was available at the time. Quite an achievement for the technology used.

Broadband was one of the dividers for the great advance of what we know today as smart devices or IoT (Internet of Things) with the new possibilities that the connection speed between devices brought, the industry itself started to develop and manufacture many more devices that somehow connect to the internet so that the user has more control and information on the state of operation.

The second invention that contributed to the great technological advance that, together with the internet, changed the way we communicate today and perform the vast majority of daily activities was the Smartphone, the smart phone enabled the development of countless applications. Applications in different industries and segments for different applications and purposes, all to facilitate and expand possibilities, whether for control or management.

It's hard to imagine any activity or daily task that doesn't involve the internet or some specific app for that, and even if it doesn't exactly depend on an app, it's very likely that there is one to help with this specific activity, ordering a car or taxi, ordering food, ordering drinks, making payments and bank transfers are some of the activities that have been revolutionized by the internet and smartphones.

Home automation, which was once more an idea of the future to connect devices and systems in the house, with the internet and the Smartphone it was possible to advance technologies to control the residence on a large scale and thus Home Automation was born.

Today homes have both analogue and digital systems, the electricity we use to turn on our equipment and lighting is analogue. Wi-fi, Televisions, TV Decoder and other devices are digital, which somehow have a system controlled by a chip or something programmable, making integration between these devices possible for automation.

On the other hand, analogue systems, such as lighting itself, depend on controller modules that in turn are digital and function as a bridge for the communication of lighting with other systems in the house, and this is the case with analogue air conditioning units and other systems. .

To unify all these systems present in the residence in a single application, we have the Automation Center which is basically the brain that understands all forms of communication present in a residence, whether analogue or digital, it is basically a library with the programming language of Home devices and systems available for systems programming.

The central is responsible for controlling all the systems, and all the programs are stored there, it also provides a totally intuitive application for the control of the unifying systems, Lighting, Blinds, Air conditioning, device control, Audio and Video , and Security.

The customizations of the residence systems are all stored in the central, each user of the system can have their own customization where it is possible to choose the ideal lighting profile in each environment, the temperature of each environment, the position of the blinds, the preferred media, songs, viewing preferred channels in favorites among other control options. The possibilities are countless and can be done directly from the application itself.

With Home Automation it is possible to control most of the systems present in a residence, the most common systems are:

  • Lighting Automation
  • Automation of Blinds and Curtains
  • Air Conditioning Automation
  • Automation of Audio and Video Equipment (TV, Receiver, Surround Sound Systems, etc).
  • Security Systems (Alarm, Security Cameras, Smart locks).

These are some of the most common systems that are integrated into the Home Automation System, other systems that can be added to the automation and are present in some homes are: TV movers, Recessed Flaps, TV in the plaster ceiling, Recessed Lifit or plaster ceiling projector, projection screens, automatic gates, and garden irrigation systems.

A professional project is essential for the perfect functioning of all systems, even more so in larger homes where the number of systems and devices is usually very high.
